Homeowner's
Security Tips
You cannot make a residence absolutely burglar-proof, but you can make entry so
difficult that the burglar will go elsewhere in search of an easier target. The
following are some security tips to assist you in preventing crime from
occurring in your home.
House Numbers
Make sure your house numbers are clearly visible day or night from the street.
Numbers on your mail-box are not enough to identify your house for emergency
response.
Key Control
When you move into a house always have the locks rekeyed. Don’t leave an
"emergency" key under the doormat, on top of the door frame or in any
other hiding spot.
Use Your Locks
Many reported burglaries occur through unlocked doors and windows. Install
deadbolt locks and use them.
Peephole
Use a wide angle door viewer in order to see who is at your door.
Landscaping
Keep doorways, windows, and porches clear when planting bushes and flowers.
Remember that bushes provide you with privacy and also give a burglar a place to
hide. Prune large trees. Low hanging limbs can provide second story access into
your house. A well maintained lawn is a very effective clue that someone is at
home.
Admitting Strangers
Never open your door to someone you don't know. Demand identification from
service people. If you are unsure, call the service company to verify identity
or the police department. If the person is legitimate, he or she will wait while
you check. Don’t depend on a chain lock when opening the door. If someone
pretends to need help at your door, tell them you will call the police for help
for them DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR!
Appearance of Occupancy
Use timers which automatically regulate the interior lighting. Timers can be
used while you are on vacation, out for the evening or during the day while you
are at work. If possible, while you are on vacation, have a neighbor park a
vehicle in your driveway. Notify the local police that you will be away so they
can check your residence in your absence for any suspicious activity.
